Samoa 2009
In September of 2009, an 8.1 magnitude earthquake hit off of the coast of Samoa. This was the largest earhquake in the world during the year 2009. This huge earthquake triggered a tsunami that caused tons of damage along the coast. The area in which this earthquake occurred was a part of the Pacific Ring of Fire. This is an area where the earth's tectonic plates come together, making the area suceptible to lots of earthquakes and volcanic activity. Since tsunamis are triggered by those two things, it makes the area suceptible to tsunamis as well. More than 190 people were killed in this tsunami in Samoa alone. This isn't including people who lived in other areas along the coast that got hit as well.
